A thrilling contest that produced a dramatic conclusion saw Kilkenny snatch a vital victory away to Tipperary in the Ragg last Saturday afternoon, as the under-16 All-Ireland camogie championship got off and running.

The official Opel Gaelic Team of the Year for Hurling for 2010 was announced during the week by the Gaelic Players Association. The team reflects the most successful counties in this year’s championship, with 15 players hailing from four counties; Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford and Galway.

It will be a case of straight back up on the horse as Kilkenny renew their hurling rivalry with Tipperary early in the new year with a February league clash.

One week after James Horan’s appointment as Mayo senior manager, I think it is fair to say that his appointment, and that of his back room team, has been warmly received by Mayo supporters. The immediate objection from some quarters might be that he is without senior inter county experience. In the current situation in which we find ourselves, I doubt that the GAA public in Mayo regard inexperience as an insurmountable issue after the summer we have just had. Horan will bring a fresh approach to proceedings, something that is needed right now. The players will trust and respect him. The younger players will remember his terrific talents on the field and will be looking forward to new training methods and a new mantra. I hear that no member of the new management team has travelled with the footballers to New York for this Sunday’s FBD final. I think that is a smart move. This weekend’s match in the Big Apple can best be described as a fun game with nothing of any significance at stake. A number of players playing out there this weekend will not be part of the new squad, and with a type of party atmosphere circulating about the place, it is best that a new manager meets his panel of players in a different environment.

Tipperary 5-22

It was a strange sight not to see the Liam MacCarthy Cup being hoisted aloft on the stage while standing in the Market Yard on Monday evening among the masses of proud Kilkenny hurling fans waiting to welcome home our gallant heroes. Unfortunately Sunday’s game didn't pan out the way we would have hoped, and for that we must ‘tip’ our hats to the Premier men for a job well done.

Last Sunday Tipp took to the game like a team possessed. They hurled out of their skin in front of a crowd of 81,765. Kilkenny on the otherhand looked a little tired and with the recent bad luck with injuries it was always going to be an uphill battle.

Even as late as yesterday afternoon the storm over the exceedingly unfair fixing of the All-Ireland u-21 final between Galway and Tipperary for Semple Stadium in Thurles on Saturday evening at 7pm had not fully abated and Galway will fulfil the fixture under protest.
